Sardinia is among the most ancient lands in Europe: already populated in the Palaeolithic, it has been permanently colonized only later in the Neolithic, around 6.000 B.C. The people who settled in North Sardinia (Gallura) came from Etruria: an ancient Italian region. The ones that populated the central part, instead, probably arrived from Iberian peninsula through the Balearic islands sea route. Even more, the ones that settled around modern Cagliari's gulf where probably Africans.

So, we may claim that Sardinians where have never been a single civilization,  but a mix of different cultures: with the passing of time, they merged  into common traditions and partially into language (“sa limba” in Sardinian), nevertheless the have always been politically divided into small States or tribes. Some times, they were into violent competition, other times they joined forces to fight a common enemy.

Cagliari is the economic, political, administrative and cultural capital city in the island: it is situated in the South of Sardinia, in the lovely Angels' Gulf, among Pula cape and Carbonara cape. The weather is moderatein winter and warmth in summer. The medieval city was composed by a village nearby a hill, which walls and towers watched over the harbor. At the beginning of its history, Cagliari was a Carthaginian colony founded by Phoenicians, which flourished under the Roman empire and, once destroyed by Saracens, it raised back under Pisa Republic. In 1326, it has been conquered by Catalans, which gave a  Spanish style to the island but, in 1718, Sardinia has been annexed to the Savoy Reign and from that moment Cagliari followed the whole island's destiny. From 1862, when Cagliari ceased to be used as a fortress, it walls did (metaphorically) open to what is new and different, and so the development of a modern city began. A city which has sun baths under the mediterranean sun and that is waiting for you!

Traditions

The thousand-year old Sardinian traditions and costumes can still be found today in many examples of daily life, primarily in the interior Island, as well as the local artisans’ products that are exported world-wide.  The local festivals and religious occurrences are reason for celebration during which there is an explosion of colors and typical Sardinian flavors and in which the tourist can take part. <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:70.85pt 2.0cm 2.0cm 2.0cm; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} -->

Monuments

Sardinia is ground for comprehensive testimonials of each of the many peoples that, during the course of the centuries, have inhabited the Island.  Evidence of our Island’s rich cultural and artistic history can be found in the Basilica di Saccargia, the Roman Amphitheatre in Cagliari and the hundreds of towers and fortresses that were built during the various historical epochs.  The caves, abandoned mines and wind-sculpted rocks simply add to its numerous, truly natural monuments. <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:70.85pt 2.0cm 2.0cm 2.0cm; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} -->
